The name of Giresun in ancient times was Kerasunta or Kerasus. The word ‘Cherry’ which is pronounced in many languages in similar ways comes from the same origin. When the Roman King Lucullus came to Giresun, he was impressed by the fruit called ‘Keras’ and cherry was first imported into Europe from Giresun in the Roman period.

The Only Island of The Blacksea – The Island of Giresun (Aretias)
In the world mythology and history appears the name of Giresun Island ‘Aretias’ with such names as Areionesos(a name used in the first age), Nesos, Area, Areos, Chalceritis(a name used by Romans).
On the Island where the Amazons and many other peoples lived exist a lot remainings belonging to mythologic ages.
The island, which is one of the coast, covers an area of 40.000m2. According to one rumour, the island was formed with the fall a piece that came off Gedikkaya that looks like an eagle beak and is located in the south-east of the city.
Deep green uplands(plateau) are worth seeing every season....
